Fuel Handling Systems

We offer a number of different fuel handling systems which are designed specifically to integrate with the Schmid biomass boilers and control systems but can be customised to deal with different fuel types and site constraints, thereby ensuring that the overall biomass system performs effectively and efficiently. All of our Schmid fuel handling systems are CE marked and manufactured under the ISO 9001 quality management system.

Rotary Arm System
This system uses a fixed rotating arm with flexible steel arms that sweep the biomass into a central screw auger where it is then transferred to the boiler. The design can be used with both woodchip and wood pellets and is ideal for installations below 500kW. Typically, the rotary arm is placed either flat or on a slight incline at the bottom of a square fuel bunker. Multiple rotary arms can also be used with each feeding into a separate collecting screw auger.

Central Discharge System
This system uses a centralised screw at the base of a fuel store with sloped sides. Gravity automatically feeds the fuel into the screw which then transfers it to the boiler. This simple design is ideal for wood pellets and should not be used for woodchip which tends to lodge or bridge above the screw, thereby preventing the fuel from leaving the store. This design is compatible with wood pellet boilers and installations of up to 500kW.

Moving Floor System
This system includes a number of parallel sliding bar ladders which move forward and backwards to gradually transfer the fuel from one end of the fuel store towards a collecting screw at the other end. Fuel can be delivered directly onto the ladders and for this reason moving floors are frequently placed in a sub-terrain bunker. A hydraulic lid allows fuel to be dumped into the store which makes tipping trailers or truck deliveries possible. This type of system is ideal for installations above 500kW and for new build projects where it is possible to include a sub-terrain bunker in the building design.

Large Systems
For very large installations, we will design and build a customised fuel handling system to deal with the substantial quantities of biomass required. These customised systems can include an automatic crane which transfers the fuel from a dumping bay to a small moving floor. This eliminates the need for a large moving floor and only the dumping bunker requires excavation, both of which help to reduce costs. The entire system is automatically controlled by the Schmid Pyrotronic control system which ensures that the rate of fuel supply matches the system demand. This type of installation is suitable for larger biomass plants such as industrial processing plants, biomass CHP plants or larger scale district heating schemes.
